Main advantage of the new industrial computers is combining performance and openness of a PC system with the reliability of a conventional PLC. The fanless devices are based upon COM Express modules mounted on an application-specific base board, which provides all dedicated control features. These are power-fail detection and up to 2 MB of MRAM for saving remanent data, a run-stop-switch for the PLC application and a CAN interface. Further fieldbus protocols can be realized by using a PCI or PCI Express card.The board also provides 24 freely programable I/Os as option. All these functions are supported with APIs for Windows and Linux. The CPU modules are available with single-core CPU Celeron M 440 (1.86 GHz) or dual-core CPU Core Duo L2400 (2x 1.66 GHz) and with up to 2 GB of RAM. Three Ethernet interfaces are already provided and two of them are capable for real-time Ethernet stacks. The systems are available with pre-installed Windows Embedded Standard 2009 or Embedded Linux including a real-time kernel. The operating system resides on a write-protected CF card. A second CF slot or up to two HDDs or SSDs are available for storing user and application data. Mounting the panel does not require additional bore holes, e.g. in the front of a cabinet. For service purposes, the system can be opened easily without demounting it.
